When Jen A. Miller got dumped, she decided to read 52 books in 52 weeks and write about it. In the course of completing that project (which she just published as the eBook 'Book a Week with Jen' she also wrote this essay. Enjoy.

I met Allen when I was 23 years old. I bobbled the phone the first time I saw him, this tan Adonis in a black leather jacket striding into the office to get a good look at his new co-worker.
 
He was perfection: broad shoulders, deep brown eyes, perfect bright smile and an easy laugh – one I learned that I could draw from him easily. He was nine years older than me, wise and infinitely cool. We leaned on each other: me on him to show me ropes, he on me to make sure our shady employer continued to pay us on time.

Love Against Borders

When I graduated college, I was twenty-one and anxious to get out of New York and see the world. I accepted the first job I found: teaching English to children in a small mountain city in Ecuador. The ten-week assignment in a foreign land soon became my life and my home, and, as one may expect, there was a girl. Two years later, when police refused to recognize my visa and placed me under arrest, all I thought about was Rosy.

Fantasy Football

This is our first International essay–straight from Australia. Kirsty Petersen is a mum, an ex-wife, and she has a Bachelor's Degree in business. She owns her own swim-lesson business and is embarking on a new life which will entail lots of things she's wanted to do but hasn't (including writing this essay).

Fantasy Football


The air was thick with testosterone.  Deep voices were at a higher pitch and would be close to hoarse in just over an hour.  Faces around me were smiling and laughing, some due to the upcoming events, others because of the camaraderie and beer.  Gold jerseys far outweighed those of our visitors from across the ditch.  As I made my way down the stairs to my seat, I felt relaxed.  It was a year since I had seen the Wallabies LIVE.  Last time I was a virgin to the game, now a full-fledged groupie. The All Blacks gave us a walloping in New Zealand and the scene was set to even the score at Home.
